How cool are these! 

If you've ever come across work by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat then you'll recognise the work on these fabulous dr martins shoes (they do boots too:) 

“If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, 

Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. 

His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. 

The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY.

Pernille Snedker Hansen

Pernille Snedker Hansen is the creator of Snedker Studio, she is a designer and artist who challenges how we look at the surfaces around us. Created one drop at the time and resembling a tree growth rings, Pernilles technique responds to naturally occurring patterns. A culmination of years of experimentation and development, Pernille has re-purposed the traditional craft of marbling. She has among others received a Wallpaper Design Award in 2012 and exhibits her work in conjunction with the Danish Crafts Council.

Motoi Yamamoto

While he draws his poetic scapes, Yamamoto seems to enter a trance that takes him far into the depths of his consciousness and into a world of peace and tranquility; in fact, while he creates, he appears far removed from reality, no matter how many observers surround him. Each installation is a metaphysical experience, one that hypnotises the viewer, and that puts the world on hold, a restful and peaceful experience where the viewer is completely absorbed in the repetitive ritual of the artist’s hand and awakens only once the final image appears as a whole.

We Make Carpets

We Make Carpets is the creative collaboration of visual artist Bob Waardenburg and designers Stijn van der Vleuten and Marcia Nolte.  Their carpets are constructed by hand with ordinary every day materials.

Fanette G

French Artist Fanette G using a mix of photography and art installation (no photoshop involved!) to create these optical illusions. Painted on abandoned buildings and later photographed from different angles to trick your eye into thinking those are 3D object floating in the room, uses a modern-art-meets-vintage-interiors approach.

Piles by ÖRNDUVALD

''Piles'' is the latest project of Pétur Örn Eyjólfsson & Søren Oskar Duvald, aka ÖRNDUVALD, which consists of three designs made of 45,546 shinny sequins that represent the vast quantities of soil, water and rubble that have been excavated from the Copenhagen underground.

Claudy Jongstra

Born in the Netherlands in 1963, Claudy Jongstra was trained as a fashion designer. She first came under the spell of felt in 1994 when she saw a Mongolian yurt on display in Nederlands Textielmuseum. The tent had a pattern of laid-in colors. She recognized the technique from pictures, but was overwhelmed by the material itself and the colors. Jongstra quickly mastered the process of felting and started to make fabrics in which wool was felted with silk fibers or was combined with transparent silk organza. In the mid-nineties this was unheard of, but the process yielded a remarkable combination of transparency and density, of elegance and rawness, of craft and art.

Ella Doran

Ella Doran transforms everyday objects into design-conscious pieces through the clever manipulation of the photographic image, either on its own, in repeat or combined with striking hand-coloured backgrounds. Ella takes her cue from the everyday world, from the close-up of a flower petal to abstract US road signage, the hustle and bustle of a Moroccan souk to simple kitchen utensils. She has transferred her vision into a wide range of products that have breathed modern life into many interiors, from London to Tokyo and even film heroine Bridget Jones's kitchen and Buckingham Palace!

Florence Manlik

Florence Manlik is a French graphic artist and illustrator who works in a highly detailed linear style, combining abstract and figurative elements. Her work features regularly in surveys of contemporary design and she has worked for a wide range of fashion related clients including Robert Normand, Selfridges, Cacharel, Fenchurch and Hermes.

Abraka

Abraka is Carine Abraham, a French designer who works for a range of different end uses including fashion and pattern design. There's a clever mix of traditional and contemporary imagery going on in her work, with some great illustration and art direction.

Robert Ryan

Robert Ryan is famed for his intricate paper cuts. He creates a world of romance and magic with simple but heartfelt messages.

Jo Angell

Jo Angell likes to describe herself as as a multi-faceted designer. Her work spans patterns for wallpaper and textiles to innovative light responsive canopies and lighting. Inspiration comes directly from nature but also research below the surface. Jo won second prize from Philips Design for ‘Breathable Felt’, a collection of experimental smart textiles incorporating petals which open in response to heat. She is currently exhibiting at the Kilkenny Arts Festival

Jo is also a member of Puff & Flock, a collective of eight female textile designers based in London.

David David

David David is the fashion label of London based designer David Saunders. It features his signature geometric prints on ready-to-wear garments for women. The image here is from his Spring Summer 2010 collection; earlier designs can be seen here.

Maxalot is an Amsterdam-based gallery that regularly commissions surface pattern work for their stunning Exposif collection of Designer Wallpapers, produced in collaboration with leading names in graphic design, photography and illustration.
